I feigned a slight yawn and mumbled something about having to get up in the morning.
"Was it something I said?" my old friend asked, with raised eyebrows.
"No..no. Not at all." I felt embarrassed, oddly. For it was he who made the otherwise pleasant evening, uncomfortable now.
He sat up straighter, as if to rise, but then remained in his seat.
"Shall we make plans for tomorrow afternoon? Perhaps lunch and a matinee?"
I stood and went to retrieve his coat, hoping he would follow. He didn't, so I turned and again stated that I had ought to get to bed.
He sighed as rose from the comfort of his chair. His eyes now downcast.
" Ill call you." was all I could think to say as I helped him into his coat.
"Alright then." he said, not believing me. Making us both liars.
